Before you begin your chemotherapy, our specialists walk you through each step. We explain which medications you’ll receive and your treatment schedule. If we anticipate any side effects, we may prescribe premedications to stop them before they start. Examples of premedications include nausea medications, pain relievers, and skin creams.
Most chemotherapy medications are IV infusions. During your infusion treatments, we focus on helping you feel as comfortable as possible. You may also want to bring books, crafts, headphones, or a tablet for entertainment. Some people also bring their favorite drink or snack to enjoy during their treatment.
In some cases, we may recommend a venous access device (VAD) or a Hickman® catheter. Our specialists place one of these devices into a vein, where it’s available when you need your IV medications or blood tests. A VAD or Hickman catheter remains in place throughout your treatment, helping you avoid frequent needle sticks.
Delivering intrathecal chemotherapy and HIPEC requires a special procedure. Our team gives you detailed instructions on preparing and what to expect. Your procedure may take place in an operating room, and you may need several days of recovery time in a hospital. We coordinate your care throughout your hospital stay and are always available if you have questions or concerns.
After your chemotherapy is complete, our team will coordinate the next steps for your care, whether surgery, radiation therapy, testing, or follow-up visits. Some side effects, such as fatigue and trouble concentrating, may take several months to go away completely.

There are several different categories of chemotherapy medications. Although they all destroy cancer cells, they do so in different ways.
