Telemedicine at Texas Oncology

Specialized cancer care no matter where you live

As a pioneer in community-based cancer care, Texas Oncology strives to provide high quality, advanced treatment to patients everywhere in our state. Telemedicine enables our physicians to connect directly with patients who need highly specialized care, even if they live many miles away from the physicians’ offices and clinics. With Telemedicine, patients across Texas have access to our extensive and diverse expertise and more treatment options, while saving time and expense by limiting travel to a distant treatment facility.

Telemedicine does not completely eliminate the need for patients to travel for certain aspects of treatment and in-person doctor visits. But the robust communications technology effectively extends the reach of the Texas Oncology’s network of more than 420  physicians by allowing some consultations and follow-up to take place remotely. This is vitally important in many areas of Texas, where access to specialty healthcare is limited or even non-existent.

For example, the team at Texas Center for Proton Therapy, located in Irving, conducts preliminary and follow-up consultations with patients who need the highly precise form of radiation offered at the center. Also, courses of treatment for patients of Texas Oncology’s Austin Brain Tumor Center, can be managed in part via Telemedicine, helping make world renowned brain cancer expertise available to patients regardless of where they live.

Specialties available via Telemedicine include:

Currently, Telemedicine from Texas Oncology requires an in-person meeting with a local physician from one of our more than 175  sites of service, and then adding specialist care remotely as needed via Telemedicine technology. Telemedicine consultations can include voice communications, video conferencing, sharing and reviewing scans and images, coordination of local supportive care, and symptom management – or any combination of those experiences as clinical circumstances require.

In the future, Texas Oncology plans to expand and further incorporate Telemedicine capabilities to reach more patients and to deliver care more efficiently and conveniently, regardless of the location of patient or physician.
