David Sommerhalder, M.D., is board certified in internal medicine. He was guided into medicine by his enjoyment of science and discovering the satisfaction of helping others. From an early age, he was fascinated by his biology classes. In college, he worked in an emergency room. He noticed that no matter how long or challenging a shift was, he went home feeling happy. That was presumably because he helped people through a challenging time in their life. These combined experiences put him on the path to becoming an oncologist.

Dr. Sommerhalder embraces the exciting progress underway in cancer therapies, while acknowledging the considerable distance we still need to travel. Advances in treatments over the past decade are significant, yet they have not diminished the fear that cancer instills. This underscores the vital work that remains, which is why Dr. Sommerhalder opted to engage strictly in cancer research. Each incremental improvement brings us closer to a future where cancer is more readily treatable.
