Sarcoma Diagnosis at Texas Oncology

Texas Oncology specialists are equipped to diagnose sarcoma and may use the following tests: 

X-rays

X-rays use electromagnetic radiation beams to produce images of internal tissues, bones, and organs. It can help doctors identify shadows within soft tissues, which may indicate a tumor.  

Bone scans

This test looks at new bone growth or breakage to diagnose conditions, such as fractures, infections, tumors, and cancer.  

Computed tomography (CT) scan

A CT scan provides detailed images of body tissues and organs to determine the extent and spread of sarcoma. 

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Using magnetic fields and radio waves, MRIs produce detailed images of soft tissue and determine the size and location of sarcoma tumors.  

Biopsy

A tissue sample is removed from the suspected tumor and examined under the microscope for cancerous sarcoma cells.  

Treatments for Sarcoma  

Sarcoma treatment is not one size fits all. That is why we personalize your treatment plan based on factors like age, medical history, general health, and treatment goals. Treatment for sarcoma may involve the following:  

Surgery

For soft tissue sarcoma, tissue is sometimes removed even if the disease has spread to other areas.  

Radiation therapy 

This therapy option uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells or shrink tumors before or after surgery. 

Proton therapy  

This non-invasive therapy option uses protons — also known as positively charged particles — to seek and destroy sarcoma tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. This treatment is often used to target tumors in hard-to-reach areas or near sensitive organs.

Chemotherapy  

Chemotherapy are medications administered through an IV and delivered to the entire body to shrink and kill sarcoma cancer cells. 

Immunotherapy  

Immunotherapy utilizes drugs, vaccines, and other therapies to activate the body’s natural defenders to fight sarcoma.
