Kidney Cancer Diagnosis at Texas Oncology
Texas Oncology specialists are equipped to diagnose kidney cancer and may use the following tests:
Blood tests
While blood tests cannot confirm whether a patient has kidney cancer, it can monitor red and white blood cell counts, as well as platelets. Patients with kidney cancer can have high levels of red blood cells, so this test can hint at a kidney problem.
Computed tomography (CT) scan
A CT scan provides detailed images of body tissues and organs to determine the extent and spread of kidney cancer.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRIs are an imagining test that uses radio waves to create detailed images of the body. It is used to look for kidney cancer.
Ultrasound
This test uses sound waves to create images of the kidney and find a kidney mass, if any. It can also show if a kidney mass is solid or filled with fluid.
Treatments for Kidney Cancer
Kidney cancer treatment is not one size fits all. That is why we personalize your treatment plan based on factors like age, medical history, general health, and treatment goals. Treatment for kidney cancer may involve the following:
Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy is a class of intravenous (administered into vein) or injectable medications that activate the body’s own immune cells so they can better recognize and eradicate cancer.
Tyrosine kinase inhibitors
A class of oral medications called tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) is effective in blocking the formation of new blood vessels required to fuel tumor growth.
Precision targeted therapy
Kidney cancer is driven by genetic mutations in the VHL gene, which signal cancer cells to grow, replicate, and spread. Precision targeted therapies bind to VHL-associated enzymes within these cells, disrupting the growth signal and leading to cancer cell death.
Clinical trials
In an effort to improve outcomes for all cancer patients, Texas Oncology offers a comprehensive and robust clinical trial portfolio that gives our patients access to new investigational cancer treatments prior to FDA approval.
