Nearly 7,000 women will be diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer in Texas in 2019, according to the American Cancer Society.
To encourage these brave women and ease some of their fears as they begin their cancer journey, Paul Loar, M.D.,FACOG, gynecologic oncologist at Texas Oncology–Austin North gifts each of his patients with a Wonder Woman© Snuggie as they enter treatment.
“I generally give out the Snuggies to patients on their first day of chemotherapy, a time when they’re pretty anxious,” says Dr. Loar, who specializes in gynecologic oncology. “When I come in with this admittedly silly gift, I see them smile and relax a little bit.”
For these patients, this gift serves as a comforting gesture and an armor of warmth in cold infusion rooms where they can spend long periods of time during chemotherapy treatments.
These patients are superheroes to me to be able to fight cancer with such grace and poise.”
“The Wonder Woman© Snuggie is hilarious. I think it gives us all a united sense of humor, comfort, and something to rally around,” patient Robin Kelley explains.
This Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month, observed annually in September, Dr. Loar united a cast of these Wonder Woman© patients to celebrate their strengths, recognize milestones in their journeys, and honor their fights against gynecological cancers.
“I just learned that many of these patients have passed their Snuggies on to other patients who are going through similar circumstances, and that made me feel good. These patients are superheroes to me to fight cancer with such grace and poise,” says Dr. Loar.
