Dr. Julie Sprunt: Managing Your Cancer Treatment During COVID-19

October 01, 2020

Julie Sprunt, M.D., FACS, fellowship trained breast surgeon at Texas Breast Specialists–Austin, is thoughtfully guiding breast cancer patients through the cancer care decision-making process in light of changes to treatment and surgical plans due to COVID-19.

Breast cancer treatment often includes surgery, but COVID-19 has some breast cancer patients opting for nonoperative cancer management during this time, Dr. Sprunt said in discussion with Karyn Couvillion, OPN-CG, CHW, certified patient navigator at the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Texas.

According to Dr. Sprunt, many breast cancers can be effectively treated with chemotherapy and a preoperative approach as COVID-19 causes treatment planning changes.

Dr. Sprunt said Texas Oncology’s doctors and care teams always think critically about the best treatment, follow-up, and maintenance strategy for each patient’s individual circumstances. This hasn’t changed during COVID-19.

These are not decisions we take lightly. We talk about every individual case and how to best treat it,” she said.

Dr. Sprunt encouraged women to be vigilant – don’t skip screening mammograms, continue breast self-exams from home, and schedule telemedicine appointments as needed. Watch the full conversation in the video below.
