Welcome Dr. Vijian Dhevan to Texas Oncology Surgical Specialists–Harlingen

July 07, 2023

Vijian Dhevan, M.D., MBA, FACS, is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology Surgical Specialists–Harlingen. Dr. Dhevan shares the importance of acting as an advocate for his patients and the enjoyment of spending time with his family outside of work.

What inspired you to specialize in surgical oncology?

I have always wanted to be a surgeon and believe that helping patients with cancer is one of the most rewarding jobs that someone can have.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in your medical career thus far?

The most valuable lessons I have learned in my medical career are those of humility and being available to my patients.  I also try to remember that although I perform many unique procedures as a surgeon, I am still a human being. Relating to and having empathy for my patients is important.

What advancements are you most looking forward to as surgical oncology continues to evolve?

I'm looking forward to less invasive surgeries, the ability to actively treat cancers that were previously considered too difficult to treat, and earlier detection of pathology before it becomes a concern.

What do you want your patients to know about you?

I want my patients to know that I am going to be their advocate during this journey. I will always respect their wishes, be honest and transparent, and provide options that allow them a choice in their treatment process.

If you could have one superpower what would it be?

I don't believe in superpowers, but if you asked me what attribute I would like to have more of, I would say more patience.

Outside of work, what are your hobbies?

I love food and would consider myself a foodie. I am also interested in cars and technology and enjoy traveling. I am always looking for new places to visit.

What is your favorite thing to do in the Rio Grande Valley?

For me personally, it's not about doing things but more so spending time with my family, no matter the activity.
