Neelima Maddukuri, M.D., hematologist and medical oncologist, is now seeing patients at
Texas Oncology–Decatur. Dr. Maddukuri reflects on the value of patient care and what the perfect day off looks like for her.
1. Did you always know you wanted to be a doctor, specifically specializing in cancer care?
Since childhood, I’ve always wanted to become a doctor. My interest in oncology was solidified during my medical training and residency and I was fascinated by how fast the field was evolving. I felt that with the cutting-edge research and new emerging treatments, working as an oncologist would allow me to make a positive impact in the lives of cancer patients while developing meaningful relationships with them and their families.
2. What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in your career so far?
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that medicine is also an art, not just a science. Additionally, listening to patients with empathy and providing holistic care is paramount.
3. What are you regularly tuning into right now (movie, book, show, podcast?)
Overall, I enjoy nonfiction more than fiction. Recently, I’ve enjoyed watching documentaries related to travel and ancient history. I’ve also been listening to the podcast, “Chasing Life,” by Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
4. What does a perfect day off look like for you?
For starters, a perfect day for me is sleeping in, waking up to the smell of coffee, calling my mom, and a bit of exercise. I really love relaxing with my family, whether it’s eating out, having an afternoon tea, or spending time in our media room.
5. What is your hidden talent?
My hidden talent is painting. I find it very relaxing and meditative.
