Introducing Laura Chow to Texas Oncology–Austin Midtown

August 11, 2023

Laura Chow, M.D., is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology-Austin Midtown. Dr. Chow explains how she has contributed to the development of new, innovative cancer treatments and her favorite recipes to bake.

What amazes you most about the recent advances you've seen in cancer care?

I realized how great the unmet need was for more effective cancer treatments when writing my pharmacology honors thesis on novel lung cancer treatments decades ago. I wanted to devote my career to helping cancer patients and improving their lives by finding better treatments. I have been honored to be part of the evolution of cancer care by designing and conducting trials that bring cancer drugs from the laboratory into the clinic. We are now able to personalize therapies for the individual by assessing markers that predict response and outcomes. This allows us to select from a wealth of targeted therapies and immunotherapies that are potentially more efficacious while minimizing side effects. Previous and ongoing clinical research developments have improved quality of life and survival, but we still have far to go in terms of curing more of our patients, and I am driven and dedicated to being part of that process.

What is the greatest lesson you've learned in your career so far?

Having family and friends who had cancer has led me to understand and empathize with the experiences of my patients and their loved ones. I am committed to supporting, connecting, and communicating with my patients when exploring the options that can best help them through their journey. I strive to be the type of physician that I would like to see if I or the people I care about develop cancer.

How has your career shaped who you are?

My career has led me to better appreciate life and the people around me. Knowing that time is finite has inspired me to make the most of the time I have, whether it be meeting new people and sharing kindness, stories, ideas, and experiences, to travelling the world and exploring new places. I believe in making a positive difference in people's lives, living life fully, making every moment count, and leaving a lasting impact.

What are you currently listening to? (e.g., podcasts, music, e-books?)

I am trying to improve my French comprehension by listening to news and podcasts from France. I also enjoy listening to an eclectic mix of indie, international pop, rock, and dance music during my training runs for races and half-marathons. I love spinning to throwback 80's and 90's dance music, and we have impromptu family ‘dance parties’ at our house to electronic dance music from my son's video games. The song that is particularly resonating with me right now is ‘Dreams’ by Fleetwood Mac.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I am particularly adept at finding fun things to do, great places to eat, and interesting places to explore, both locally and when travelling. I like trying out innovative new cooking recipes, and bake tasty Italian sprinkle cookies, a good apple crumble pie, and an awesome banana bread!

What does a perfect non-workday look like to you?

My perfect day involves being active while spending time with my friends and family. I would go on a long run, bike ride, or hike in the morning, followed by walking around shopping or exploring the city, and then cooking or sharing a meal with friends.

As a child, what was your dream job?

I wanted to be an artist or a concert pianist as a child, but developed a love of biology, science, and helping others as I grew up. As an adult, being a physician and researcher is my dream job, as it incorporates the art, science, and humanistic aspects of everything I love.
