Texas Oncology Opens San Antonio's Largest Comprehensive Cancer Care Center

The New Center Will Serve More Than 300 Patients a Day

San Antonio (May 31, 2017) — Texas Oncology announced today the completion of construction of the largest community comprehensive cancer care center in San Antonio, giving cancer patients enhanced access to medical and surgical oncology services, leading-edge imaging and radiation treatment technology, and research and clinical trials. Texas Oncology-San Antonio Medical Center is designed to provide patients comprehensive outpatient cancer treatment services – high quality community-based care near the needed support of loved ones.

“The new center is a major step forward in cancer treatment in San Antonio and evidence of our commitment to providing patients the best care possible, including access to research and clinical trials, close to their homes, families, friends, and jobs. Texas Oncology’s focus is on more personal care, treating the whole patient, not just their cancer, and without requiring disruptive, costly travel to access leading edge treatment options,” said Dr. Roger Lyons M.D., FACP, Texas Oncology–San Antonio Medical Center. “Our commitment to research at this location has resulted in eight studies being published in peer-reviewed journals thus far in 2017.”

With capacity to serve more than 300 patients a day, the center will feature advanced radiation capabilities, including the Varian TrueBeamTM high-dose linear accelerator, which includes onboard CT and fluoroscopy imaging for highly precise treatments. The TrueBeamTM also delivers treatments more quickly, potentially treating some tumors in two minutes, and with fewer treatment sessions. Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) is among the precision therapies that will be provided.

Located at 5206 Research Drive, Texas Oncology-San Antonio Cancer Center replaces the current location at 4411 Medical Drive and will see its first patients on June 5. The center offers innovative medical oncology, hematology, surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology, radiation oncology, anticoagulation management, and other specialized care, with seven procedure rooms, eight lab work rooms, 52 chemotherapy chairs and more than 30 exam rooms. Beyond the latest cancer technology, the center will also feature a full range of supportive services including a pharmacy, onsite lab, mobile PET/CT and ultrasound imaging capabilities, and an outdoor healing garden. Surgical oncology as well as gynecological oncology services will be provided at the new location.

“In this new center, we bring to full fruition our patient-centered approach to cancer care, combining compassionate care teams of physicians, nurses, and other support, with the newest technologies and innovative treatment methods, including research and clinical trials,” said Dr. Manuel Santiago, Texas Oncology—San Antonio Medical Center.

The new 40,000 square foot center is a significant expansion, one and half times the size of the facility being replaced, with a staff of 13 physicians, and a supporting team of nurses, technicians, and administrators. Across the San Antonio area, Texas Oncology’s 34 physicians treat approximately 30,000 patients per year at 16 locations in the San Antonio area, including seven in San Antonio, and sites in New Braunfels, Floresville, Hondo, Boerne, Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Pleasanton, Seguin, and Uvalde.
