Publication: KAMR-TV (NBC), Amarillo

AMARILLO -- Today is World Cancer Day.

Texas Oncology would not only like to recognize the cancer patients but cancer prevention. Everyone can take steps to reduce their risk and new data shows major progress in reducing cancer deaths.

Recently, the American Cancer Society released its annual cancer statistics and reporteda 22 percent decrease in death rate from cancer from its peak in 1991. The study found that more people quitting smoking and avoiding obesity could decrease cancer rates by an additional 40 percent in the next 20 years.

Texas Oncology recommends five key ways for Amarillo residents to reduce their cancer risk:

1) maintain a healthy weight
2) eat a nutrient-rich diet,
3) exercise regularly, and
4) get recommended cancer screenings, and
5) practice sun safety.
