Texas Urology Specialists–Dallas Methodist and Midlothian Welcome Dr. Andrew Sun

December 28, 2020

Andrew Sun, M.D., urologist, is now seeing patients at Texas Urology Specialists–Dallas Methodist and Midlothian. He shares the inspiration behind his career and what excites him about the future of men’s health.

Where did you go to school? Where did you complete your residency?

I’m originally from the Washington, D.C., area and went to college at The University of Maryland. Then I moved to Boston to attend Harvard Medical School and completed my clinical years at Massachusetts General Hospital. I completed a urology residency at Cleveland Clinic and a fellowship in male reproductive medicine and surgery at University of California, Los Angeles, where I became a sub-specialist focused on men's health. Now, I'm happy to be in the Dallas area and serve Texans.

I wanted to focus on how to improve the quality of my patients’ lives, in addition to the quantity of it."

What inspired you to specialize in cancer care?

Cancer patients are some of the toughest people I've met, and their resiliency and bravery inspires me. Having guided patients through the treatment process, I developed an interest not only in treatment, but also in treating the side effects of cancer. I wanted to focus on how to improve the quality of my patients’ lives, in addition to the quantity of it. Through this and my training, I developed a specific interest in the treatment of male hormonal issues, sexual and erectile dysfunction, urinary difficulties, and male infertility.

Who inspires you?

My parents have always been my greatest source of inspiration. They immigrated to this country to seek higher education and a better life. Dealing with a language barrier and working three jobs, they eventually obtained their doctoral degrees, making tremendous sacrifices along the way to ensure I had all the resources I needed to succeed. Their example continues to inspire me to be a better physician, husband, and person every day.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

This is a hard one, but I'd choose space/time manipulation. Outside of medicine my biggest passion is history. I love to read, learn about, and imagine what it would be like to live in different times and how varied the human experience has been over the years. I’d love to travel to any place at any point in time and experience what the world was like then. I'd also love to travel into the future to see what things look like for us in a few thousand years.
