Diagnosis
Diagnosing Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Routine physical
A healthcare provider may perform a routine physical to identify signs and symptoms that may indicate a blood disorder, including AML.
Performing a complete blood count (CBC)
A CBC is a common blood test that is performed during routine check-ups. It measures the different levels of cells in the blood, including white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. In AML, blood counts can be high or low, but are often low.
Treatment
Treatments for Acute Myeloid Leukemia
AML treatment is not one size fits all. That is why we personalize your treatment plan based on factors like subtype, age, medical history, general health, and treatment goals. Treatment options for AML may include:
Remission induction therapy
This is the initial treatment phase of AML. The goal is to achieve a complete remission or disappearance of all detectable leukemia cells. This is often achieved through high-dose chemotherapy.
Consolidation therapy
To prevent AML from returning, consolidation, a phase of treatment aimed at killing remaining cancer cells, is given immediately after recovery from remission induction therapy.
Relapsed or resistant leukemia
If a patient’s AML returns after remission induction and consolidation, they may undergo other treatment options, such as allogeneic stem cell transplant (a transplant where stem cells are from a donor) or chemotherapy.
