While the exact cause of MPN is not fully understood, there are several risk factors that may be associated with increased risk of developing the disease:

Tobacco smoke contains cancer-causing agents, including benzene, which can enter the bloodstream and contribute to the development of mutations.
Exposure to harmful chemicals and radiation
Harmful chemicals, like benzene, as well as radiation, are associated with an increased risk of MPN by damaging DNA and disrupting normal cell growth. Benzene can be found in some glues, detergents, art supplies, and cleaning products.
Age
Because gene mutations accumulate over time, people over 60 are more likely to develop MPN.
People with MPN might not have any signs or symptoms. Instead, MPN is usually detected through a routine blood test. If you notice that any of the MPN symptoms keep coming back or worsen over time, talk with your doctor as soon as possible.
