General Summary

As a cancer survivor himself, James Petrikas, D.O., has a special interest in the physical and emotional concerns of long-term cancer survivorship and has spoken at regional meetings sharing his experience as both patient and oncologist. He is trained in the use of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), 3D conformal radiation therapy and gamma knife. His particular interests include high-dose and low-dose rate brachytherapy to treat breast, prostate and gynecologic malignancies.

Education

Earning his doctorate of osteopathic medicine from Midwestern University, in 2001, he then completed his medicine internship at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. He completed his radiation oncology residency at Northwestern University in Chicago, where he was co-chief resident in radiation oncology from 2004-2006. He is board certified by the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Petrikas enjoys spending time with his wife Mary Ann and their six children. He is a Licensed Private Pilot and enjoys outdoor activities including sports, fishing, and gardening.

Dr. Petrikas is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO), where he is a member of the Health Policy Council Regulatory Committee and the Code Utilization & Application Subcommittee. Additional memberships include American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Radiation Oncology, American Cancer Society, and the Texas State and Dallas County Medical Societies.

Research Interest

Dr. Petrikas’ clinical interests include breast, head and neck, prostate, gynecologic and lung malignancies. He is published in the fields of breast cancer, prostate brachytherapy, and radiobiology, presenting these data at national meetings.
