Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN)
Expert MPN Care, Close to Home
In the myeloproliferative disorders, bone marrow cells responsible for producing blood cells develop and function abnormally. As a result, patients with MPN are at an increased risk for thrombotic (blood clotting) and hemorrhagic (bleeding) events, as well as symptoms like fatigue, itching, and night sweats. At Texas Oncology, we are here to provide trusted expertise, advanced treatments, and individualized care to help you navigate MPN.
What sets Texas Oncology apart is our collaborative, patient-centered approach. With more than 550 physicians across the state, our patients receive world-class care close to home.
When you seek care with us, you can expect a personalized care plan, a dedicated team alongside you, and the latest advancements in cancer treatment, all designed to support you.
MPN Diagnosis at Texas Oncology
Texas Oncology specialists are equipped to diagnose myelodysplastic neoplasms and may use the following tests:
Routine physical examination
Physical exams allow physicians to detect potential MPN signs and symptoms early, like fatigue and an enlarged spleen.
Complete blood count (CBC)
CBC measures the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It can reveal abnormal cell count numbers and other changes that may be indicative of MPN.
Bone marrow aspirate and biopsy
Doctors use a needle to take a small sample of bone marrow and fluid from the hip bone. The collected cell samples are examined under a microscope to see if the cells have an unusual shape, genetic issues, or other signs that might indicate MPNs.
Treatments for Myeloproliferative Neoplasms
MPN treatment depends on the type. That is why we personalize your treatment plan based on factors like age, medical history, general health, and treatment goals. Treatment for MPN may involve the following:
Polycythemia vera (PV)
- Phlebotomy: Regular removal of blood from a vein to reduce the concentration of red blood cells.
- Low-dose aspirin: Helps lower the risk of blood clots.
- Hydroxyurea: Used for high-risk patients to suppress blood cell production in the bone marrow when phlebotomy and low-dose aspirin are not effective.
- Ruxolitinib: An oral medication used for adults with PV who cannot tolerate hydroxyurea or whose disease no longer responds to it. It helps control red blood cell levels, reduce spleen size, and relieve symptoms like fatigue and itching. It may also reduce the risk of blood clots.
Essential thrombocythemia (ET)
- Low-dose aspirin: Helps lower the risk of blood clots.
- Hydroxyurea: Suppresses blood cell production in the bone marrow for high-risk patients.
Primary myelofibrosis (PMF)
- Drug therapy: Medications help manage symptoms and complications of PMF, for example:
- Hydroxyurea: May reduce spleen size and control high blood cell counts.
- Ruxolitinib (Jakafi®), momelotinib, and other targeted therapies: Help relieve symptoms such as fatigue, itching, and night sweats, and may reduce spleen size.
- Erythropoietin and luspatercept: Used to treat anemia by helping the body produce more red blood cells.
- Stem cell transplantation: Replaces diseased blood-forming cells with healthy stem cells from a donor.
- Blood transfusions: May be needed to regularly manage anemia.
