Cervical Cancer Diagnosis at Texas Oncology

Texas Oncology specialists are equipped to diagnose cervical cancer and may use the following tests:

Pap smear  

During this test, a sample of cells from the cervix is taken using a brush and examined under the microscope for abnormal cervical cells. The American Cancer Society and the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends getting a first pap smear at age 21, followed by a pap smear every three years.  

HPV testing  

This test screens for high-risk types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer. During this test, a sample of cervical cells are collected using a small swab and sent to a lab where they are tested for the presence of high-risk HPV DNA.  

Colposcopy  

If results from a pap test are uncertain, a provider may conduct a colposcopy. During this procedure, a physician applies a mild vinegar solution to the cervix and uses a microscope to look for abnormal cells, which may appear more white than pink. If abnormal areas are identified, the physician can remove samples to be further evaluated.  

Treatments for Cervical Cancer  

Cervical cancer treatment is not one size fits all. That is why we personalize your treatment plan based on factors like age, medical history, general health, and treatment goals. Treatment for cervical cancer may involve the following:  

Radiation therapy  

Radiation therapy is a common way to treat cervical cancer. Using high-energy rays, this treatment damages or kills cancer cells to prevent them from growing or dividing. There are different types of radiation therapy that can be employed:  

• External beam radiation therapy: This therapy involves sending radiation beams from multiple directions to the pelvis. This treatment lasts roughly four to six weeks.  
• Implant radiation therapy: Implant radiation therapy refers to treatment where radioactive material is placed directly into the cervix. This allows the radiation dose to be delivered directly to the cancer while reducing radiation to neighboring organs.  

Surgery  

Surgery for cervical cancer may involve removing cancerous cells or performing a hysterectomy (removing the uterus) for early-stage cancer. It may also involve removal of surrounding tissues and lymph nodes for advanced cervical cancers.
