Over 100 Texans have become sick with measles recently. To protect our patients and staff, we ask that patients and caregivers avoid coming in to our clinics if they have been near someone with measles, have been diagnosed with measles, or have any symptoms of infection like a fever or a rash. If any of these apply to you and you have a visit booked, please contact your clinic to let them know and book a virtual visit (telehealth) instead. Welcome Lisa Anderson to Texas Breast Specialists–Medical City Dallas

December 16, 2024
Lisa Anderson, M.D., breast surgeon, is now seeing patients at Texas Breast Specialists–Medical City Dallas. Dr. Anderson shares one common misconception about breast cancer and her favorite hobbies outside of work.

1. What is a myth you would like to dispel about breast cancer?
A common myth about breast cancer is that it only affects older women. Today, 10% of new breast cancer cases in the U.S. are diagnosed in women younger than 45, and this rate is increasing. I encourage all women to be proactive in performing monthly breast self-exams and starting yearly mammograms at age 40. Early detection can significantly increase the chances of successful treatment.

2. If you could tell prospective patients one thing, what would it be?
Give yourself grace. There’s nothing you did that caused your breast cancer. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed and scared, and it’s important to remember you’re not alone. My team and I are committed to guiding you through this challenging time and enabling you to resume the vibrant and fulfilling life you were enjoying prior to diagnosis.

3. How do you approach making difficult medical decisions with your patients?
It’s important to make decisions as a team. Together, we will discuss a patient’s diagnosis and treatment options then develop a plan tailored to their individual needs. My goal is to provide my patients with clear information and support, so they feel empowered to make choices that align with their values and goals. My patients are at the center of this decision-making process, and I’m here to help them navigate every step of the way.

4. What are your hobbies outside of work?
I enjoy traveling and immersing myself in local cultures and cuisine. Traveling also inspires my passion for cooking and baking, which I enjoy sharing with my family and friends. I learned how to scuba dive in residency and my favorite dive thus far was at Molokini Crater in Maui.

5. What is a social cause you’re passionate about?
I’m passionate about addressing disparities in healthcare access, particularly for marginalized populations. During my fellowship at The Ohio State University, I had the privilege of caring for incarcerated breast cancer patients. This experience deepened my commitment to advocating for equitable treatment options and resources for all individuals, regardless of their circumstances. I believe everyone deserves high-quality care and support in their cancer journey, and I’m dedicated to being a voice for those who may not have one.

6. What is your favorite type of food?
This is a tough question, but I’d have to say Italian. I was in Italy for the first time this past summer and the pasta, pizza, and gelato were some of the best foods I’ve ever eaten. A goal of mine is to someday learn how to recreate those foods in my own kitchen.

7. Are you an indoor or outdoor person?
I love to be outside. I’m a firm believer that sunshine heals the soul. Some of my favorite outdoor activities are hiking in the mountains and swimming in temperate waters. In Dallas, I enjoy exploring the local parks and trails such as White Rock Lake or Katy Trail.
