About
Dr. Thomas E. Hutson is a highly experienced medical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of urologic cancers, including kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers. He is recognized internationally for his work in cancer research and drug development and has spent his career helping advance new treatment options for patients. Dr. Hutson has authored more than 500 medical publications and is frequently invited to speak at national and international medical conferences.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hutson has played key leadership roles in cancer research. He has served as a lead investigator on numerous international clinical trials and has held national leadership positions with organizations such as the Sarah Cannon Research Institute. He currently serves on several research and advisory committees dedicated to improving cancer care. Dr. Hutson is also editor-in-chief of the Kidney Cancer Journal and The International Journal of Medical Case Reports.
Dr. Hutson practiced for more than two decades at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, where he helped lead a nationally recognized urologic cancer program and directed an innovative clinical trials center. In 2024, he was recruited to help establish the first academic cancer center in West Texas. There, he served in multiple leadership roles, including Director of the UMC Cancer Center and Division Chief of Hematology and Medical Oncology, while also teaching future physicians as a professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. In 2026, Dr. Hutson joined Texas Oncology in Abilene, where he focuses on patient care, clinical research, and bringing new cancer therapies to the community.
Dr. Hutson earned both his medical degree and pharmacy degree in Ohio and completed his residency and specialized cancer training at the Cleveland Clinic. This combined background allows him to offer patients a deep understanding of both cancer treatment and medications.
Faith and the connection between medicine and compassionate care are very important to Dr. Hutson. In addition to his medical training, he has pursued advanced education in theology, public health, healthcare leadership, and healthcare law, reflecting his commitment to treating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit.
Dr. Hutson is married and has two sons. When he is not seeing patients in Abilene, he enjoys spending time at his ranch in Knox City, Texas.
