Managing Cancer Symptoms
Managing Cancer Symptoms
Whether it is aches and pains or changes in your appearance, take note of changes in your body and discuss them with your care team as soon as you can. Reporting symptoms early allows your care team to take swift action, prevent further complications, and improve outcomes. Other important steps you can take to manage your cancer symptoms include:
- Staying on schedule with your prescribed treatment
- Taking your medication as prescribed by your doctor
- Contacting your care team if you missed a dose or anticipate interruptions to your schedule
- Avoid taking over-the-counter medicines, natural supplements, or vitamin therapies without your doctor’s knowledge, as other medications could interfere with your treatment
Managing potential side effects of treatment
Some patients may experience few side effects while others may experience “normal” reactions to treatment. Cancer treatment affects everyone differently, and side effects depend largely on the patient’s diagnosis, overall condition, and specific course of therapy. It is important to recognize and report side effects — both physical and emotional — to your doctor right away. Keep track of any changes and share them with your care team.
Your care team is here to support you. By staying aware of changes and speaking up about any side effects, you can play an active role in your treatment and well-being. No concern is too small to share.
