Welcome Stephen Barman to Texas Oncology–Round Rock

Stephen Barman, M.D., hematologist and medical oncologist, is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology–Round Rock. Dr. Barman shares some insight into his career and background.
1. What excites you most about joining an organization like Texas Oncology?
Texas Oncology is a well-respected organization, and I am excited to be a part of it. I especially value the practice’s commitment to providing leading edge, personalized care to all patients, regardless of their diagnosis. I look forward to serving the residents of Central Texas. Having completed part of my medical training in Texas, I am also excited to move back and call Texas home once more.
2. What is one of the biggest challenges you face in your profession?
I believe one of the biggest challenges in medical oncology and hematology is overcoming the uncertainty and fear associated with cancer and blood disorders. Open communication is crucial to helping each patient better understand their diagnosis and play an active role in their treatment.
3. What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in your career so far?
The most valuable lesson I have learned thus far is to listen carefully to each patient. Listening allows me to learn who they are and what is important to them. Through conversation and empathy, I find that I am better able to connect with my patients and their families to address their specific needs.
4. What is the best volunteer experience you had and what did you do?
Some of my most impactful volunteer experiences were through the Boy Scouts of America. I worked on many projects that ultimately led me to become an Eagle Scout.
5. Outside of work, what do you enjoy spending your time doing?
Outside of work, I enjoy traveling and spending time with my family. I also enjoy the outdoors and am an avid sports fan.
6. What are you looking forward to exploring in the Austin area?
There are many things my family and I are excited to experience in the Austin area. Most of all, we are looking forward to exploring the city’s many parks and its thriving food scene.
