CT is a quick and painless procedure that combines x-rays with computers to produce highly detailed cross-sectional pictures of your body. The images provide valuable information for staging your cancer or planning your treatments.
CT exams often require the use of contrast material that the patient drinks and the technologist may inject intravenous contrast through a small IV placed in the patient’s arm.
Positron emission tomography (PET) is an advanced molecular imaging procedure that creates detailed images showing the location and extent of cancer within the body. By evaluating the molecular and physiological activity of cells, PET helps physicians identify areas of abnormal cell growth and function. This information supports earlier detection, accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of cancer response to therapy.
PET/CT combines two powerful imaging technologies: PET, which provides information about cellular activity, and computed tomography (CT), which provides detailed anatomical images. Together, PET/CT allows physicians to diagnose, stage, and restage cancer, as well as assess how effectively a treatment is working. The combined images provide precise information about the location, characteristics, and size of tumors, helping to guide personalized patient care.
MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses, and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone, and many other internal body structures. MRI can be used to support tissue characteristics; aiding physicians is correct diagnosis and treatment plans. MRI will often include an injection of contrast material to further evaluate the tissue(s) of concern. Texas Oncology’s MRI are the preferred design by claustrophobic patients, helping to reduce fear, anxiety, and the need for sedation. It enables scans of a full range of patients, including pediatric, obese, kyphotic, and those patients with respiratory, pain, and mobility issues. Some of our cancer treatment centers offer bone density screening. While useful for detecting early signs of osteoporosis and determining rate of bone loss, bone density screening does not contribute to cancer staging or follow-up.
