I went and had my usual physical around my birthday time. And the doctor noticed early stages of prostate cancer. And at that point it was to decide, where do you want to go? It was my decision to come to the Texas Center for Proton Therapy. I had met Dr. Lee already. And the only reason he would come here, is that this had to raise the bar. As for me, I knew that this was top of the line in terms of the science that went in to it and the new technology. And if it’s going to be new and improved, I want to be a part of that.
And then I really got excited when they said that you weren’t going to be involved with the radiation and the after-effects that would come with that or going under the knife which was really not something I was comfortable with. With proton therapy, it’s so precise that it can deliver the kind of attack on cancer, I think, unlike any other traditional treatment. You don’t have to damage all the good cells to get to the bad stuff.
And on top of that, I could actually be treated and still go back to work the same day. I would get a schedule and they would make it as convenient for me as possible in terms of when I would come in. And everybody was really respectful of your time. Dr. Lee — the entire staff — gave 110% effort in terms of treating the cancer and in terms of treating me. And making me feel like I was an individual and not just a number at a medical facility. They take care of you from A-Z. And I’m not talking about just the medical part, I’m talking about you as the person. And your family is included. It’s the little extra touches that you get that you couldn’t get anywhere else. I personally felt in my heart that this was the best place to be treated for cancer, period.
