Honoring the life of Maria Luisa Verduzco

The staff was wonderful and one of the best parts of coming to the center. The radiation therapists were always so kind and helpful, and the front desk staff were so caring and considerate of our schedule.

Overview

In a touching gesture of love and remembrance, the family of former patient Luisa Verduzco chose to honor her memory in a way that brought comfort and joy – by bringing refreshments for current patients at Texas Center for Proton Therapy. “My mom was a warm hug to anyone who needed it and always smiling – she loved spending time with her family and her grandchildren were her greatest treasure. She enjoyed reading, tending to her plants, and watching the birds on her patio.”

The diagnosis

In 2019, Luisa Verduzco underwent chemo, radiation, and surgery to manage her gynecological cancer diagnosis. Following a second surgery in 2023, Luisa’s family was determined to give their mother the best possible quality of life, and came to Texas Center for Proton Therapy in 2024, where she began proton radiation therapy under the care of Dr. Jared Sturgeon. “The staff was wonderful and one of the best parts of coming to the center. The radiation therapists were always so kind and helpful, and the front desk staff were so caring and considerate of our schedule.”

The journey

Proton therapy is effective in treating gynecologic cancers, including cervical, ovarian and uterine cancer. Proton therapy allows for highly precise targeting of cancerous tissues, which is crucial for gynecological cancers due to the proximity of sensitive organs and tissues. Detecting cancer at an early stage when it is still small and hasn't spread often opens up a wider range of treatment options and leads to better outcomes.

“Our faith in God and reliance on one another throughout this journey has kept us afloat emotionally – we miss our mom and grandmother dearly, and hope that these refreshments brought a bit of joy to patients currently undergoing treatment at Texas Center for Proton Therapy. Thank you all for your kindness and support you showed my mom and our family during our time here.”
