Proton Therapy vs Traditional Radiation Therapy in Patients with Oropharyngeal Cancer

The results of a recent study presented at the 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting provide evidence for proton therapy as a new standard-of-care treatment approach for the management of head and neck tumors. After a median follow-up of three years, patients who received intensity-modulated proton therapy had a progression-free survival rate of 83.0%, with fewer complications and side effects compared to those who received traditional radiation therapy. Proton therapy for head and neck cancers affords the opportunity to preserve vital organs such as the swallowing muscle and larynx salivary glands, often avoiding the future need for speech therapy or alternative feeding methods.
