Colorectal Conditions and Procedures
Colon and Rectal Treatment at Texas Oncology
The colon and rectum are parts of the body’s digestive system. Together, with the anal canal and anus, they form a long, muscular tube called the large intestine. The colon makes up the first six feet of the large intestine, and the rectum and anal form the last several inches. Cancers of the colon and rectum are often referred to jointly as “colorectal cancer;” however, their treatments differ greatly. At Texas Oncology, our colorectal program lies at the heart of our commitment to delivering advanced cancer care. Our doctors specialize in diagnosing and treating colon, rectal, and anal cancer, bringing their skills and expertise to each case. What sets Texas Oncology apart is our collaborative, patient-centered approach. With dozens of specialists and locations across the state, our patients receive world-class care close to home. When you seek care with us, you can expect a personalized care plan, a dedicated team alongside you, and the latest advancements in cancer treatment, all designed to support you.

Your colon and rectal care team
At Texas Oncology, our care team is here for you. Your team will vary on your specific needs but may include: Gastroenterologist A gastroenterologist diagnoses and treats digestive system disorders. For colorectal cancer, they often perform colonoscopies to detect issues and remove precancerous polyps (abnormal growths of tissue that can develop in various parts of the body). Colorectal surgeon Colorectal surgeons treat diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus, including cancer. They also perform colectomies and minimally invasive procedures when polyps or tumors require removal beyond what can be done endoscopically. Oncologist Oncologists handle chemotherapy, radiation, and other non-surgical therapies after a cancer diagnosis is confirmed.
What to Expect During Treatment
Texas Oncology ensures your colorectal treatment is based on your unique diagnosis. To tailor each treatment to your specific needs, the process typically includes the following components: [h3] Before Consultation: During the initial visit, you will meet with a colorectal surgeon or specialist to review your medical history, imaging, and lab results. This is a great time to ask questions and discuss your treatment options along with the risks and benefits of specific treatments.
During Treatment:
Depending on your condition, your surgeon may perform a minimally invasive procedure or robotic-assisted surgery. Incisions are typically smaller to promote faster recovery times.
After Post-treatment care:
After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort. Your care team will be available to answer questions about the procedure and schedule follow-ups to monitor your healing process and long-term health. You will be given specific instructions but can always call for questions.
