Colon & Rectal Cancer
Expert Colorectal Cancer Care, Close to Home
Colorectal cancer is used to describe both colon and rectal cancers. The rectum and colon are parts of the body’s digestive system. Together, with the anal canal and anus, they form a long, muscular tube called the large intestine. The colon makes up the first six feet of the large intestine, and the rectum and anal form the last several inches. Although cancers of the colon and rectum are often referred to jointly as “colorectal cancer,” their treatments differ greatly.

Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis
The physicians of Texas Colon & Rectal Specialists are equipped to diagnose colorectal cancer and may use the following tests:
Ultrasound
This test uses sound waves to create images inside the body and can determine the depth of the tumor into the rectal wall.
Colonoscopy
Uses a flexible tube with a camera to examine the entire colon and rectum for abnormal growths, such as polyps, which can be removed during the procedure.
Biopsy
Involves removing a small tissue sample to examine under a microscope for cancerous cells.
Computed tomography (CT) scan
A CT scan provides detailed images of body tissues and organs to determine the extent and spread of colorectal cancer.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
MRIs are an imaging test that uses radio waves to create detailed images of soft tissues in the body.
Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
During a PET scan, a radioactive form of sugar is injected into the blood to see if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
Treatments for Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer treatment is not one size fits all. That is why we personalize your treatment plan based on factors like age, medical history, general health, and treatment goals. Treatment for colorectal cancer may involve the following:
Robotic colorectal surgery
A surgeon uses a robot unit — a four-armed device which operates a laparoscope (thin, flexible tube) and up to three specialized surgical instruments — to perform surgery. Using this machine allows surgeons to perform the operation with a high degree of precision.
Laparoscopic colorectal surgery
A minimally invasive method where surgeons utilize a micro-camera and instruments to view the abdomen and perform surgery.
Transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEMS)
This non-invasive outpatient procedure is performed to remove early-stage rectal tumors through the anus.
Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS)
A newer technique similar to TEMS, this surgery is used to remove small rectal tumors using a single-incision (cut) through a single point of entry.
