Meet Texas Oncology Surgical Specialists’ New Thoracic Surgeon, Dr. Gustavo E. Guajardo Salinas

January 06, 2021

Gustavo E. Guajardo Salinas, M.D., thoracic surgeon, is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology Surgical Specialists–San Antonio Stone Oak and San Antonio Medical Center. We sat down with Dr. Guajardo to learn more about his passions for thoracic surgery and his patients.

What inspired you to specialize in thoracic surgery?

In my opinion, thoracic or chest surgery is one of the most gratifying specialties. Thoracic surgeons treat cancer with minimally invasive surgical techniques that allow patients to return to their regular activities with less recovery time. As a thoracic surgeon, I also have the opportunity to help patients through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

What has working with cancer patients taught you about resiliency in the human spirit?

While each patient is unique, throughout my career I have noticed that nearly all of my patients have something in common – they fight as hard as they can despite knowing the road ahead may be challenging. It is humbling to see my patients stay strong and positive. Their strength and resiliency through these experiences continue to inspire me.

What are you most looking forward to as cancer treatment continues to evolve?

I am looking forward to discovering new ways to diagnose lung cancer and thoracic tumors, especially in the early stages before patients show symptoms and while their tumors are small. These advancements will help improve long-term outcomes for patients.

I believe in treating all my patients the way I want my family members to be treated."

What do you want your patients to know about you?

Even though my specialty is thoracic surgery, I have a passion for surgery and medicine in general. I believe in treating all my patients the way I want my family members to be treated. I also enjoy learning something every day, whether it is a new way to perform surgery or discovering new treatments that quicken recovery and result in better outcomes for patients.

Where is your favorite place you’ve ever visited?

I was very lucky to grow up in Mexico, where I got to visit beautiful places on the coast, in the mountains, and in the desert. One of my favorites places is a few miles outside Monterrey in the north of Mexico, where my father’s family is from. It is very similar to the Texas Hill Country, quiet with great views.
