Introducing Sarah Yue Wang to Texas Oncology-Tyler

November 03, 2023

Sarah Yue Wang, M.D., M.S., hematologist and medical oncologist, is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology—Tyler. Dr. Wang explains why she decided to join Texas Oncology and what she is looking forward to exploring in Tyler.

What inspired you to specialize in cancer care?

The privilege to care for and develop strong relationships with cancer patients is what inspired me to love cancer care. In graduate school, I was intrigued by the increasing number of smart drugs that modify cellular signal transduction pathways. The chance to participate in cancer research and the involvement in developing and utilizing novel therapies is a dream come true.

Why did you decide to join an organization like Texas Oncology?

Texas Oncology is a well-established organization that provides access to state-of-the-art facilities, fosters collaboration and knowledge-sharing among healthcare professionals, provides a wide range of resources, and conducts cutting-edge clinical research—all with a goal of delivering high-quality patient care and improving the patient experience.

What do you think the future of cancer treatment will look like?

I think the future of cancer treatment is personalized therapy tailored to an individual’s tumor genetic profile. It could be targeted therapy off-the-shelf, personalized tumor vaccine, individualized cellular therapy, or immunotherapy. Artificial intelligence will likely also play an important role in the fields of image processing and data analysis.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

I would love to have the ability to time travel. I’d like to experience ancient civilizations of the past and visit my future great-grandchildren (if there are any).

What was your first job before medicine?

I worked in an ice cream shop during a summer break in high school. We were allowed to eat as much ice cream as we wanted, which was a real treat.

Outside of work, how do you enjoy spending your free time?

As a mother, wife, and daughter, I spend most of my free time with my family. We like to cook, hike, travel, and watch movies together. I also have a passion for planting flowers and am working on developing my gardening skills.

What are you looking forward to exploring in Tyler?

As an avid gardener, I look forward to visiting the Tyler Rose Garden and admiring the beautiful flowers. I’d like to sample the local food, visit the Caldwell Zoo, hike on the Tyler Azalea Trail, and visit the Goodman-LeGrand House and Museum.
