According to Srinath, Sundararajan, M.D., FACP, of Texas Oncology–Katy and Bellville, however, early detection of cancer is important as early-stage cancer treatments can be shorter, less expensive, and more effective for patients, especially those with higher risk.

Birdwell, M.D, FACS, of Texas Breast Specialists–Methodist Dallas Cancer Center, was featured on the KERA News Morning Edition segment, where she corrected some common misinformation about breast cancer. Dr. Birdwell explained that you don’t need a family history of breast cancer to get the disease, that leading a healthy lifestyle doesn’t prevent breast cancer, that men can get breast cancer, and that mastectomy isn’t the only form of treatment for breast cancer patients. She highlighted modifiable ways to present breast cancer, including maintaining a healthy weight and activity level, avoiding tobacco use, reducing extra estrogen, and decreasing alcohol consumption.
