Welcome Dr. Nihar K. Patel to Texas Oncology-Round Rock

July 01, 2022

Nihar K. Patel, M.D., hematologist and medical oncologist, is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology–Round Rock. Dr. Patel reflects on lessons learned throughout his career and what excites him about joining the Texas Oncology community.

What inspired you to specialize in cancer care?

There’s a good chance most of us will be touched by cancer during our lifetime. The uniqueness of cancer patients has always been powerfully motivating to me, and it is an honor to work and engage closely with them during such an uncertain time in their lives. What specifically inspired me was being able to potentially change the course of the disease for cancer patients, improve their quality of life, and provide effective mitigation of symptoms.

What excites you most about joining Texas Oncology?

Texas Oncology has a remarkable reputation. It has been a trailblazer in accessible, high-quality cancer care for nearly 40 years, all while providing a way for patients to take part in some of the most leading-edge clinical trials in the country without having to travel unreasonable distances. That's encouraging and exciting to become a part of.

What are you most looking forward to as cancer treatment continues to evolve?

Over the past decade, there has been a growing role for precision and personalized medicine in cancer treatment. Navigating through molecular differences among tumors and genetics can result in immense patient benefits. Determining a cancer treatment plan can be complicated for patients, so it is my role to traverse that nuance with patient-oriented goals as my guide.

What is the greatest lesson you have learned in your career so far?

It is not so much a lesson, but rather a compass. Since the start of my career, listening, keeping patients well-informed, respecting individual beliefs, and open communication and have been my cardinal points of emphasis.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Exploring the world with my beautiful wife and two curious children. When I am not doing that, I enjoy listening to podcasts, watching college football, reading, traveling, and trying new things.

Where is your favorite place you’ve ever visited?

Keeping it domestic, my favorite place I have visited is Washington D.C. This city is an unparalleled insight into history, in all its glory and intricacy.

What is your favorite music genre and why?

‘80s music has become a genre of its own in some sense. It was a golden era for all types of music from pop and heavy metal to punk and hip hop. What's not to like?
