Dr. Deepthi Thotakura Joins Texas Oncology-Allen

June 01, 2022

Deepthi Thotakura, M.D., hematologist and medical oncologist, is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology–Allen. Dr. Thotakura reflects on what she would like her legacy as a physician to be, as well as advice to her younger self starting out in oncology.

What inspired you to specialize in cancer care?

I knew early on in medical school that I wanted to pursue oncology. Initially, it started off with me enjoying learning about bone marrow, cell structure, and function. As I did more rotations on the oncology service, my passion grew as I realized what an honor it was to help people during the most difficult times of their lives. This specialty provides both patient care continuity and amazing new advances that are life-altering for patients I value. The opportunity to make an incredible impact in people’s lives solidified my intent to specialize in oncology.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in your career so far?

I have learned that working closely with radiation oncologists, cancer surgeons, and other medical professionals creates a holistic and team- based approach, which can help us achieve providing the greatest quality of life and opportunity for patients.

What would you like your legacy as a physician to be?

I want to be remembered as a physician who puts their patients first, provides them with the best possible care and opportunities, and is always there for them during one of the most difficult times of their lives.

What is one piece of advice you would give your 18-year-old self?

If I could go back, I would tell myself to identify your passions and priorities in life and devote as much time and energy as possible to achieve those dreams.

Do you have a favorite movie or podcast series?

One of my favorite movies is Forrest Gump. I have been listening to the “Research To Practice” podcast by Dr. Neil Love.
