Introducing Hematologist and Medical Oncologist Dr. Sabarina Ramanathan to Texas Oncology–Sugar Land

December 06, 2021

Sabarina Ramanathan, M.D., hematologist and medical oncologist, recently joined Texas Oncology–Sugar Land. Dr. Ramanathan tells us about what inspired her career in cancer care and what she wants her patients to know about her.

What has been a defining moment in your medical education?

The day I was accepted to my hematology and oncology fellowship. It set the tone for how I would practice medicine for the rest of my life.

What inspired you to specialize in cancer care?

My interest in cancer care developed gradually. In my clinical rotations, the time I spent in the oncology department was an integral and fascinating part of my training. The oncologists I worked with handled all aspects of cancer care with finesse and compassion. The experience of such continuity of care is increasingly rare, and oncologists have the unique opportunity to counsel patients at a vulnerable point in their lives. I longed for the knowledge, experience, and masterful ability to walk into a room, talk to a stranger, and cultivate a personal relationship while offering the best possible care under such challenging circumstances. That inspired me to specialize in oncology.

What excites you most about joining an organization like Texas Oncology?

Texas Oncology provides high-quality, multidisciplinary care, and joining the organization is an exceptional opportunity for me to grow both professionally and personally. As oncologists, we strive to give patients the best possible care while they’re going through difficult times in their lives. Texas Oncology serves as that much-needed support system for our patients and their loved ones.

I will strive to provide the highest quality cancer care and answer any questions that may arise. As your provider, my goal is to make your life better in any way I can."

What do you want your patients to know about you?

Visiting an oncologist can be daunting, but I really want my patients to feel comfortable when coming to see me. I will strive to provide the highest quality cancer care and answer any questions that may arise. As your provider, my goal is to make your life better in any way I can.

Where is your favorite place you’ve ever visited?

I don’t have one favorite place. However, some of the best experiences I've had were in Pensacola Beach, Tahoe, and Manali, to name a few. Thailand is my next venture.
