Texas Oncology–Irving Welcomes Dr. Kiran Kancharla

May 14, 2020

Kiran Kancharla, M.D., medical oncologist, is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology–Irving. We sat down with Dr. Kancharla to learn more about her passion for caring for cancer patients.

Did you always know you wanted to be a doctor, specifically studying oncology?

Yes, during my school years I was always fascinated by healthcare providers. Eventually, my own personal experience in dealing with my dad, who passed away at age 42 with lymphoma, strengthened my desire to become an oncologist.

Over the years, patients have taught me the importance of using words of encouragement and being compassionate and empathetic."

What has working with cancer patients taught you about resiliency in the human spirit?

Cancer patients are very strong. Yet, they still look for a supporter, friend, advisor, and healer in their oncologist. So, it is of utmost importance to have a positive attitude to guide my patients in the right direction. Over the years, patients have taught me the importance of using words of encouragement and being compassionate and empathetic.

What are you most looking forward to as cancer treatment continues to evolve?

I am looking forward to my patients living longer with better quality of life. I’m also hoping to utilize more personalized cancer care, and more focus on prevention and early detection.

Who inspires you?

Patients are my inspiration!

What are your hobbies outside of work?

I enjoy traveling, listening to music, reading books, and exploring a wide variety of cuisines.
