Dr. Haris Baig Joins Texas Oncology–Cypress Fairfield, Houston Willowbrook, and Tomball

December 18, 2020

After six years at Texas Oncology–Abilene, Haris Baig, D.O., medical oncologist, moved his practice to the Houston area. Dr. Baig is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology–Cypress Fairfield, Houston Willowbrook, and Tomball. He shares more about his approach to patient care and why he’s glad to be back in his hometown of Houston.

What brought you back to Houston after six years serving patients in Abilene?

I grew up in Houston and my family lives here. I enjoyed working in Abilene and have many close relationships with my former patients and their families. I moved home to be closer to my extended family and to help care for my father, who has Alzheimer’s disease.

When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, or any serious illness, they don’t live with that diagnosis on their own. It impacts every aspect of their lives, and it affects the lives of their loved ones as well."

How has your experience helping care for your father enabled you to relate to caregivers of cancer patients?

Family is so important. When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, or any serious illness, they don’t live with that diagnosis on their own. It impacts every aspect of their lives, and it affects the lives of their loved ones as well. I know what it’s like to be a caregiver for a loved one, and I have respect and empathy for those serving as caregivers for cancer patients.

Did you always want to specialize in oncology?

When I was in medical school, I had interest in many specialties, but I loved oncology simply because of the connections I made with patients. There’s no comparison, in my experience, to the optimism and resilience of cancer patients despite their disease. Their strength throughout treatment is incredible, and my patients’ will to fight inspires me.

How has COVID-19 impacted your approach to patient care?

COVID-19 has certainly presented challenges, most notably in-person support. What I enjoy most about working at Texas Oncology is the family environment, and in-person visits are a part of that. Thankfully, Texas Oncology has a great telehealth platform that keeps my team and me closely connected to patients and their families.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

My wife and I stay busy with our three small kids. We like to do things the five of us can enjoy together. Personally, I enjoy English football, or soccer. I like to cook and try out any new kitchen gadgets I can get my hands on.
