Texas Oncology Surgical Specialists Welcomes Shaun P. McKenzie, M.D., FACS

November 15, 2019

Texas Oncology Surgical Specialists recently welcomed Shaun P. McKenzie, M.D., FACS, to the team. Learn more about Dr. McKenzie, who is now seeing patients at our South Austin and Austin North locations.

Do you have any family members in the medical field?

I have two uncles who are physicians and two aunts who are nurses. My wife is also a physician and practices as an obstetrical and gynecologic hospitalist.

What are you most looking forward to as cancer treatment continues to evolve?

We are in the midst of a revolution in cancer care. Beyond our evolving ability to use patients’ own immune systems to fight cancer, we’re identifying and incorporating the specific genetic fingerprints of each individual patient’s cancer into personalized treatment plans. As a surgical oncologist, these new approaches – along with our progress in integrating surgery, chemotherapy, biological therapy, and radiation in treatment plans – have enhanced our ability to remove tumors that were previously considered inoperable.

I tell patients that my job is to help them define their cancer journey, not let their cancer define them.”

What has working with cancer patients taught you about the resiliency of the human spirit?

Treating cancer patients has taught me so much about strength, hope, contentment, and the human fighting spirit for life. I tell patients that my job is to help them define their cancer journey, not let their cancer define them. Cancer journeys take incredible strength and I have been inspired, amazed, and at times brokenhearted watching patient resilience in action.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

My hobbies outside of work include running, weight training, hiking, water sports, and bird hunting. I have three children who fill much of my remaining time as well.

Who inspires you and why?

My family has always inspired me. My father is one of the smartest men I have ever known, and his work ethic was unparalleled. My mother has a very strong personality and is a great combination of both approachable and convincing. Throughout my life, I have tried to find the right combination of all those traits and put that inspiration into my life, family, and work.
