Survivors Connect at Austin Survive and Thrive Symposium

April 25, 2019

The second annual Texas Oncology Foundation Survive and Thrive Symposium in Austin featured several expert speakers from Texas Oncology and was a huge success among the hundreds of attendees, including survivors, caregivers, healthcare providers, volunteers, and some attendees – goats!

Goat Yoga and In-Depth Discussions

The event kicked off with a morning session of goat yoga, featuring 10 pygmy goats that helped the participants relax and prepare for a day of learning, sharing, and connecting. Topics of discussion included nutrition, fear of recurrence, late and long-term effects, and intimacy after cancer.

For both presenters and survivors, the relaxed atmosphere gave them a chance to go beyond in-office visits and address more thoroughly the issues that arise post treatment. Patients and caregivers value the opportunity to connect with individuals facing similar journeys.

This symposium provided great information and allowed questions to be answered. It also allows those affected to be part of a larger group.” Eric W.

Survive and Thrive Programming

This Austin event marks the 11th symposium held in the state since the inception of the Survive and Thrive Symposium series. Texas Oncology Foundation’s Survive and Thrive programming provides education on post-cancer treatment, nutrition, exercise, and overall wellness through one-day symposiums and monthly webinars.

While all the events follow a similar format, we tailor the topics to fit the needs of each audience.” Natalie O’Roark
Texas Oncology Foundation Executive Director

Fall 2019 symposiums will be held in Arlington, Tyler, Houston, and Beaumont. Individuals unable to travel to those markets may join the monthly Survive and Thrive webinars that further highlight the symposium topics in an easily accessible format through online presentations with a question and answer session.
