Supporting Women Cancer Researchers

March 01, 2019

Immunotherapy, personalized medicine, proton therapy. Breakthroughs in cancer treatment don’t come fast or easy, but rather through painstaking research by committed, brilliant scientists and physicians. Texas Oncology’s focus on research and clinical trials helps make innovative treatment available to patients across Texas, whether in small towns, suburbs, and large cities.

It’s no secret that women are underrepresented in the field of cancer research, but progress is being made.”Debra Patt, M.D., MPH, MBA

Texas Oncology’s support for cancer research also extends to groups like Women Who Conquer Cancer (WWCC), which is a program of the Conquer Cancer Foundation, the foundation of ASCO, the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The goal is to advance cancer research by supporting young women researchers early in their careers through the ASCO Young Investigator Awards.

Recently, Texas Oncology’s Dr. Debra Patt hosted a successful fundraiser for WWCC, raising more than $57,000 to help support research grants for young women cancer researchers.

Swain, event co-host Dr. Gladys Rodriguez, event speaker and Conquer Cancer researcher Dr. Tina Cascone, and ASCO Board Member Dr. Linda Bosserman (front) to a 2018 WWCC fundraiser in Austin, Texas.

“It’s no secret that women are underrepresented in the field of cancer research. As a recipient of a Young Investigator Award, I can attest to the value and impact of programs that help boost young professionals,” said, Dr. Patt.

Great progress has been made in advancing career opportunities for women in oncology and research. Still, there are unique challenges. Dr. Patt shared her perspectives in a recent article in the Women Who Conquer Cancer Newsletter.
