Get to Know Our Newest Surgeon: Dr. Rachel A. Weinheimer

December 04, 2019

We’re proud to welcome Rachel A. Weinheimer, M.D., who is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology Surgical Specialists–Amarillo. We sat down with Dr. Weinheimer to learn more about her inspirations and hopes for cancer care.

What inspired you to pursue a medical career?

I grew up in a family that was immersed in medicine. At a young age, I saw the fulfillment and satisfaction my parents gained from caring for their parents, and I wanted to experience those same emotions.

When my mother died from colon cancer at age 54, I became focused on this disease in particular.

What are you most looking forward to as cancer treatment continues to evolve?

Even though surgery is my focus and I enjoy my profession, I look forward to the day that colon and rectal cancer can be managed without surgery. I’m hopeful that newly diagnosed patients will one day receive painless treatment regimens for their disease.

I’m excited to join a multidisciplinary team that is united by the shared desire to prioritize the successful treatment of our cancer patients.”

What excites you most about joining an organization like Texas Oncology?

I’m excited to join a multidisciplinary team that is united by the shared desire to prioritize the successful treatment of our cancer patients.

I appreciate that when I have a question about a patient, I'll be able to find an answer simply by popping my head into the office next door.

What are you regularly tuning in to right now?

I listen to a constant stream of audiobooks. After finishing two excellent books, “A Gentleman in Moscow’ and “The Nightingale,” I’m currently listening to a new thriller called “The Winters.” I am always in the market for a new book.

What is a quote that inspires you?

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." (Winston Churchill)
