Meet Our Newest Hematologist: Dr. Harris Naina

July 10, 2019

We recently welcomed Dr. Harris Naina to the Texas Oncology team. We sat down with Dr. Naina, who is now seeing patients in Fort Worth, to learn more about his experience as a hematologist and his promise to patients.

What inspired you to specialize in cancer care?

As a medical student, I was excited by hematology, especially clinical hematopathology. I found it fascinating that a diagnosis can be made from a single drop of blood examined under a microscope – and this basic premise of hematology continues to excite me to date. Using this information, we can formulate a care plan to save lives. For me personally, hematology is the greatest blend of laboratory and clinical medicine.

What excites you most about joining an organization like Texas Oncology?

Texas Oncology is the one of the leading cancer networks in the country, with a very impressive track record. As a researcher and a clinician, Texas Oncology provides me with opportunities in both areas.I look forward to leading multiple clinical trials in the coming years and contributing to the ongoing research that Texas Oncology is leading.

What are you most looking forward to as cancer treatment continues to evolve?

Personalized medicine and potential targeted treatment for the majority of cancers with minimal side effects. By the end of the next decade, we will continue to see treatments advance for many cancers, particularly chronic myeloid and lymphoid leukemias.

Who inspires you and why?

Professor Thomas Witzig, one of the leading lymphoma specialists in the world, who was my mentor at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.  He is a superb clinician, great researcher, and above all, a compassionate human being. Regardless of how busy he is, patient care is paramount.

What is the #1 thing you want your patients to know about you and why?

For me, my patients are the boss, and caring for them is an honor. I have learned a great deal from my patients and continue to learn more with each passing day. Every treatment plan is designed with the patient in mind and backed by careful thought process, research, and dialogue to ensure that all options have been explored and we are making the best joint decision.
