We recently welcomed Dr. Jonathan Verma to the Texas Oncology team. Dr. Verma is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology–Methodist Dallas Cancer Center and Texas Oncology–Methodist Charlton Cancer Center. We sat down with Dr. Verma to get to know him and learn more about his career in radiation oncology.
What inspired you to specialize in cancer care?
I knew very early in my training that I wanted to specialize in cancer care. The diagnosis of cancer is an unexpected and life-changing event for patients and their families. I greatly value the relationships I have built helping care for patients during a tough period in their lives. It’s also extremely rewarding to work with colleagues to use the latest technology available to treat this disease.
What excites you most about joining an organization like Texas Oncology and why?
Texas Oncology is one of the premier organizations for cancer treatment in the United States. The practice has gathered extremely talented physicians across essentially all medical specialties that treat cancer patients, and I am excited to work with such a talented group. In addition, Texas Oncology has a track record of investing in the latest technology, and participating in clinical research that will help continue to improve cancer treatment in the future.
What are you most looking forward to as cancer treatment continues to evolve?
Cancer treatment is continually evolving at a rapid pace, with new practice-changing results in medical journals seemingly every few weeks. There are exciting developments in immunotherapy and molecular therapies that show promise, and investigation is occurring on how to integrate these approaches with radiation therapy. In addition, the use of focused radiation to treat patients with precision, and therefore low side effects, is a very exciting area of research.

Who inspires you and why?
I’ve always been inspired by my dad. His example is a continuous lesson to work hard, always improve yourself, and reinvent yourself when necessary, treat people with respect, and always do the right thing.
What is the most important thing you want your patients to know about you?
I take the trust of my patients very seriously, and my goal is to provide the highest quality cancer care possible for every patient that I have the privilege of treating. My goal during every visit is for patients to have their voices heard, and leave with a full understanding of their disease, their own individual situation, and every treatment being proposed.
