Abundant, wild, and bee-friendly huajillo shrubs helped establish Uvalde as the “historic honey capital of the world.” But the sweetness of this part of the Texas Hill Country comes in many forms – as cancer patients at Texas Oncology’s Uvalde location recently discovered.
On Valentine’s Day, the women of the Sabinal Quilt Club donated 24 colorful and beautiful handmade quilts to the cancer clinic, to the delight of patients and staff.
“It’s a labor of love for our club. We wanted to show our support for our friends and neighbors who are facing the difficult challenge of cancer,” said Arlene Ryan, quilt club member. “We hope these quilts will keep patients warm and remind them that they are in our thoughts and prayers.”
The quilts came in two sizes, 50” square and 30” square, and in a multitude of patterns and colors. Some were specially designed to fit wheelchairs.
“It means so much to us and to our patients when our neighbors in the Uvalde community show support like this,” said Dr. Slavisa Gasic, medical oncologist, Texas Oncology-Uvalde. “The quilts are not only beautiful but also helpful in keeping patients warm while they are receiving chemotherapy. We are grateful to the Sabinal Quilt Club for their generosity.”
Ryan was joined by club member Mary Ann Flores for the donation. Dr. Gasic and team extend their thanks to other quilt club members, including Jolee Berendt, June Edwards, Alma Martinez, Mary Louise Rogers, and Gina Turner.
The Uvalde location, one of Texas Oncology’s more than 175 sites of service, offers medical oncology and chemotherapy infusion, with access to additional services and treatment at comprehensive cancer centers nearby in San Antonio.
