Homecoming: Getting to Know Dr. Heather Pulaski

June 26, 2019

Texas Oncology recently welcomed Dr. Heather Pulaski, who is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology-Longview and Tyler. We spoke with Dr. Pulaski to learn more about where she’s been, her proudest moments, and how she feels returning home.

What inspired you to specialize in cancer care and why?

I was drawn to the field of obstetrics and gynecology – and decided to become a gynecologic oncologist – because it allows for the development of close long-term relationships with patients through care and education in a surgical specialty. I truly value the personal relationships that develop with my patients in their cancer journey and the trust they place in me and my team during one of their most vulnerable times. Our knowledge about cancer biology and treatments is constantly expanding, and learning about these treatments to educate myself and my patients is very satisfying.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

My two kids keep me busy with their extracurricular activities and I love watching them try new things. Together, we love to travel and explore new places, and we do a lot of camping and outdoor activities like biking and kayaking.  In my free time, I like to garden and try new recipes.

What are you most proud of when you reflect on your medical career to date?

In oncology, we have the opportunity to make a true difference in how our patients and their families cope through a difficult diagnosis, treatments, and uncertainty about the future. I find the opportunity to provide comfort, education, and advanced treatment options through chemotherapy, surgery, and survivorship care very fulfilling. I’m proud to be considered a friend and advocate for my patients.

How many cities have you and your family lived in? What was your favorite?

My journey in medicine has taken us from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Dayton, Ohio, and now to East Texas. We loved being near the mountains in North Carolina (and it was a fantastic place to garden) but we are most excited about our move back to Texas to be near family and become part of the community.

What excites you most about joining an organization like Texas Oncology?

Patients experiencing cancer already have so many obstacles in their way, like trying to balance the treatments their body needs with the rest of their life such as family, jobs, and community involvement. I’m excited about joining Texas Oncology because my colleagues understand the position patients are in and we strive to offer multidisciplinary cancer care with surgery, chemotherapy, clinical trials, and radiation in convenient community locations.
