Dr. Christopher D. Braden Joins Texas Oncology—New Braunfels

October 01, 2022

Christopher D. Braden, D.O., hematologist and medical oncologist, is now seeing patients at Texas Oncology–New Braunfels. Dr. Braden discusses his perspective on the future of cancer care and how one college chemistry class sparked his interest in becoming a doctor.

Did you always know you wanted to be a doctor, specifically specializing in hematology and medical oncology?

I did not always know I wanted to be a physician. I originally developed an interest in hematology and medical oncology during college when I was in an organic chemistry research class focusing on developing anti-cancer compounds.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in your career so far?

I would say two important lessons standout most to me. First, do your best to always listen to your patients. Second, recognize the importance of staying current on the latest cancer developments and research being discovered in the realm of oncology as treatment continues to evolve.

Based on the advances you’ve seen in cancer research, what do you think is the most promising discovery for the future of cancer care?

There have been several important and revolutionary developments in cancer care over the last two decades. Two of the most promising discoveries are one, the continued advancement of medications targeting genetic and genomic abnormalities associated with the progression of cancer, and two, the emergence of immunotherapy-based treatments aimed at targeting patients’ individual cancer types.

What advice would you give someone who is aspiring to be a doctor?

I would advise people who are interested in entering the healthcare field to study hard and learn as much as possible. Additionally, choose a specialty based on their interests.

What are you looking forward to exploring in New Braunfels?

I am looking forward to meeting new people in the community and exploring the different restaurants and events throughout the New Braunfels area.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and two dogs. I also love traveling to various destinations across the map and learning about the history of each place.

What are some of your favorite movies?

I have a few favorites, including “Star Wars,” “Jaws,” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”
