texas oncology more breakthroughs. more victories
Over 100 Texans have become sick with measles recently. To protect our patients and staff, we ask that patients and caregivers avoid coming in to our clinics if they have been near someone with measles, have been diagnosed with measles, or have any symptoms of infection like a fever or a rash. If any of these apply to you and you have a visit booked, please contact your clinic to let them know and book a virtual visit (telehealth) instead. Welcome Caroline K. Fiser to Texas Breast Specialists–The Woodlands

October 29, 2024
Caroline K. Fiser, M.D., breast surgical oncologist, is now seeing patients at Texas Breast Specialists–The Woodlands. Dr. Fiser discusses the importance of breast cancer screenings and how she unwinds from a stressful day.

1. How has your specialty shaped who you are?
Being a breast surgical oncologist has profoundly impacted me, both personally and professionally. It has taught me the value of resilience, empathy, and precision. Each patient’s journey through diagnosis and treatment serves as a reminder of the strength and hope people have, which inspires me every day. It has also made me more attuned to my own health and my family’s well-being as well as the importance of balance and self-care.

2. What do you wish more people knew about breast health or breast cancer?
I wish more people understood the importance of early detection and regular screening. Breast cancer caught in its early stages is often highly treatable, and the outcome can be much better. It's also important for people to know that advanced treatment options are constantly evolving, making it easier for women to lead full, healthy lives post-treatment.

3. Describe a time when a patient's outcome exceeded expectations. What contributed to their successful treatment?
One case that stands out was a patient who came to us with an aggressive form of breast cancer. Through a combination of our multidisciplinary team of experts, advanced treatment options, and the patient’s perseverance, we exceeded all expectations. The multidisciplinary team approach to treating breast cancer care is one of the cornerstones to a patient's successful treatment.

4. If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
Although this may sound a little crazy, I would choose the ability to eliminate the need for sleep altogether. While I thoroughly enjoy sleep, I feel I could be twice as productive without it and accomplish everything in one day. The ability to stay awake, refreshed, and fully functional would allow me to maximize my time for work, travel, family, and enjoying all the things I love.

5. How do you unwind from a stressful day?
Spending time with my family is the best way for me to relax. Whether it’s having dinner together, playing a game, or just talking, it helps me disconnect from the stresses of work. I also enjoy getting outside to go for a walk, reading a good book, or trying a new recipe in the kitchen.

6. If you weren’t a doctor, what would you be?
Although I don't have experience with either, I think I’d be a travel writer or photographer. I’d love exploring different parts of the world while working outdoors, trying new foods, and experiencing new cultures. The idea of combining productivity with new experiences while capturing the essence of different environments, sounds amazing.

7. What does a perfect day look like to you?
A perfect day starts early, with a homemade latte and a visit to a local farmers market with my husband and daughter. Then, I’d find a new restaurant for brunch. I’d finish the day with a home-cooked meal with friends and family, then wind down by reading to my daughter or watching a show on Netflix.
