Texas Oncology Expands Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Services in East Texas

DALLAS (October 2, 2024) – Texas Oncology, one of the largest community-based oncology practices in the U.S., recently expanded its pediatric hematology-oncology services in East Texas to improve access to specialized cancer care. The new satellite office — located in Tyler on the campus of Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute — will extend care services for children and adolescents in the East Texas community as one of only two sites in the region offering specialized pediatric cancer and blood disorder services.

“Historically, families in East Texas had to travel to Dallas or Shreveport for all aspects of care, including outpatient visits and follow-up appointments,” said Matthew Fletcher, M.D., pediatric hematologist and oncologist at Texas Oncology–Tyler Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. “Travel time and related expenses can be a significant barrier for families of pediatric cancer patients in East Texas. I’m glad to be part of the Texas Oncology team bringing this care to Tyler.”

Patients and their families can expect comprehensive and personalized care close to home, including access to bone marrow and stem cell transplants, screening for cancer predisposition syndromes, clinical trials and cancer research, and long-term survivorship support. Additionally, patients and their families will have access to an oncology summer camp, emergency on-call services, and telemedicine consultation/visits.

“Individualized care is paramount for pediatric patients. Children have unique medical, social, and educational needs, and their developmental stage plays a significant role in tailoring their care,” said R. Steven Paulson, M.D., president and CEO of Texas Oncology. "By expanding our services to Tyler, we're bringing expert pediatric cancer care closer to families in East Texas, offering a wide range of services and programs to support children throughout their cancer journey."
