Texas Oncology to Expand San Antonio Research Program as Dr. Anthony Tolcher Joins Practice


Texas Oncology announced today that world renowned cancer researcher Anthony Tolcher, M.D. has joined Texas Oncology-San Antonio Medical Center. Tolcher will help advance and expand Texas Oncology’s existing comprehensive research and clinical trials program, which currently includes more than 2,000 patients annually statewide participating in more than 150 open trials at any given time. Tolcher is a co-founder of San Antonio-based South Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics (START), a leader in Phase 1 medical oncology clinical trials.

As a recognized leader in connecting patients to life saving treatment innovations, Dr. Tolcher will be key to our commitment to growing the research program in our community-based practice,” said Dr. Steve Paulson, chairman and president of Texas Oncology. 

Tolcher is a graduate of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Following residencies at the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia, he was a research fellow at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md. Before co-founding START, he was director of clinical research at Cancer Therapy and Research Center in San Antonio. 

Tolcher’s accolades include fellowships from the National Institutes of Health and the Royal College of Physicians in Canada. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Past Chairman of the Experimental Scientific Review Committee, and member of the Cancer Education Committees. Tolcher also is a reviewer for multiple scientific journals, and he has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, 26 conference proceedings, and five book chapters. He was instrumental in the founding of the San Antonio 1000 Cancer Genome Project which will continue to benefit cancer genomics and the patients of San Antonio.

Tolcher will be based at the new Texas Oncology-San Antonio Medical Center location at 5206 Research Drive.
