Alvaro Restrepo, M.D., Named Public Citizen of the Year

Award Recognizes Dr. Restrepo's Efforts to Raise Awareness About Cancer

The Lower Rio Grande Valley chapter of the National Association of Social Workers recently named Dr. Alvaro Restrepo, a medical oncologist at Texas Oncology–McAllen, public citizen of the year at its annual conference.

The Public Citizen of the Year award, given by the local chapter and established by the NASW, honors an outstanding member of the community who has provided a significant contribution to the local population who may be at risk, vulnerable or facing challenges in the community. The annual award is given to a non-social worker that demonstrates leadership and exemplifies the social work value and ethics of the organization.

“Dr. Restrepo has made valuable contributions both in generating awareness about cancer and treating cancer patients in the Rio Grande Valley and has improved the quality of life for many in our community,” said Melissa Saldivar, branch chairperson for the Lower Rio Grande Valley chapter of the NASW. “For many years, Dr. Restrepo has dedicated his time and energy to ensure the success of the Breast Cancer Bike and Walk event, which helps raise funds for people in need of financial support who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer.”

“I am truly honored to receive this award and recognition within my local community,” said Dr. Restrepo, Texas Oncology–McAllen. “I am proud of the fine work and compassion that our entire Texas Oncology team delivers each and every day to help others in their fight against cancer.”

Dr. Restrepo’s nomination and award as the Public Citizen of the Year will be sent along to the State Chapter for consideration and possible selection at the state annual NASW conference in the fall.
