Local Oncologist Gives Cancer Prevention Tips for Borderland

El Paso, Texas (KTSM) - Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. While there has been a decline in cancer death rates from smoking, other causes are on the rise.

"We need to be responsible for our own health because if we don't, there's only so much people like me can do when you come in and it's a little too late," Local oncologist Dr. Miguel Albino said.

According to the American Cancer Society, 4% of all diagnosed cancers were due strictly to obesity last year, "Combine that with the heavy alcohol and smoking patterns that we can see in our community as well as the rest of the United States. Even though smoking related cancers are decreasing, we're seeing obesity related cancers are on the rise significantly," Dr. Albino explained.

The local oncologist also said the link between causes of cancer and unhealthy habits are to blame for higher risk, but there are ways to prevent it. For example, maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating more greens, fruits, and grains; getting daily exercises, limiting alcohol consumption, and quitting smoking.

However these cancer prevention tips are not the replacement for treatment.

"All these things are definitely going to help but they cannot substitute the treatments for people diagnosed with cancer," Dr. Albino said, "It's important for people to know that 'hey there's someone there' pretty much in your backyard that can help and is available for not only treatment but for any counseling and guidance."

Health officials said its never too soon or late to check on your health, and that's key to early detection.
